Our client, a leader in the mining industry, is looking for a
Lead Mechanical Layout Designer to join their team on a long term basis in the Toronto area.
Job Description
The Lead Mechanical Layout Designer plays a key role in the design and development of mining and mineral processing facilities, contributing to both study-phase and detailed engineering projects. This position focuses on ownership of complex plant layout and mechanical design activities, including 3D modeling, equipment arrangement, and construction drawings, while collaborating closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, vendors, and clients across Canada and internationally.
Responsibilities
- Develop comprehensive plant layouts for mining and mineral processing facilities, including both greenfield developments and brownfield expansion projects.
- Design material handling systems such as conveyors, transfer chutes, tanks, platework, and mill processing facilities to meet project and operational requirements.
- Produce detailed 3D models and mechanical drawings using Smart3D (SP3D), AutoCAD, CADWorx, SolidWorks, and related design software.
- Coordinate plant layouts with process, mechanical, structural, piping, electrical, and instrumentation disciplines to ensure integrated and constructible designs.
- Perform clash detection within complex plant environments and resolve design conflicts to maintain safety, operability, and constructability.
- Review vendor drawings, assess equipment requirements, and integrate vendor equipment into overall plant layouts and mechanical designs.
- Interpret and work from process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), and other engineering deliverables to develop accurate layouts.
- Participate in site visits, field reviews, laser scan surveys, and point cloud modeling activities to validate existing conditions and support design development.
- Support project execution by assisting with schedules, budgets, resource planning, and mechanical layout deliverables throughout the project lifecycle.
- Provide leadership within the design team by mentoring junior designers and engineers and contributing to their technical development.
- Contribute to proposals, technical studies, and client presentations, helping to shape project concepts and communicate design solutions.
- Collaborate with clients, vendors, and internal project teams to ensure alignment on design requirements, project objectives, and deliverable expectations.
Essential Skills
- Minimum of 8 years of experience as a mechanical designer, with a focus on mechanical layout and design for mining or mineral processing facilities.
- Proven experience in mining environments, including plant layout design for mineral processing operations.
- Strong experience in plant layout, equipment arrangement, and material handling systems for industrial facilities.
- Hands-on experience designing conveyors, transfer chutes, tanks, and process plant infrastructure.
- Proficiency with 3D modeling and drafting software such as Smart3D (SP3D), AutoCAD, CADWorx, or SolidWorks.
- Experience working in multidisciplinary EPCM or consulting engineering environments.
- Knowledge of mechanical design standards, building codes, and industrial plant design practices.
- Experience supporting both greenfield developments and brownfield expansions in mining or mineral processing.
- Demonstrated lead experience, including taking ownership of layout design activities and guiding project deliverables.
- Ability to work independently while effectively managing multiple concurrent projects and priorities.
- Strong communication skills and experience coordinating with clients, vendors, and internal project teams.
Work Environment
The role is based in a hybrid work environment, with time split between working in the office in Etobicoke and remote work, depending on project needs. The position involves close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams of process, mechanical, structural, piping, and electrical specialists within a consulting engineering setting. Work includes both office-based design and documentation, as well as occasional site visits, field reviews, and participation in laser scan and point cloud survey activities at mining and mineral processing facilities. The organization offers an established, professional environment that invests in its people, emphasizes technical excellence, and supports long-term career progression. Designers work with modern engineering and 3D modeling tools such as Smart3D, AutoCAD, CADWorx, SolidWorks, and SmartPlant, and engage on high-profile projects across Canada and internationally, with opportunities to take on leadership responsibilities and play a visible role in project execution and client interactions.
