You will complete design tasks efficiently while ensuring full compliance with customer requirements, industry standards, and established engineering best practices. This role offers the opportunity to work on rugged, high-reliability electro-mechanical systems used in demanding environments and to contribute to impactful defense and aerospace projects.
Responsibilities
- Design and analyze mechanical systems for armored vehicles, containerized mission systems, and logistics equipment.
- Assist with product development and mechanical design to meet contract requirements and project objectives.
- Ensure all designs comply with applicable commercial, military, and industry codes, standards, and engineering best practices.
- Prepare, review, and update design documents, engineering drawings, and technical specifications.
- Produce layouts and design concepts that support functional, manufacturable, and cost-effective solutions.
- Provide technical input and recommendations across various projects and multidisciplinary teams.
- Perform and verify standard engineering calculations and detailed design work to ensure accuracy and reliability.
- Initiate and propose new design ideas that improve performance, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness.
- Prepare for and participate in design reviews, presenting design rationale and responding to technical feedback.
- Develop and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) to accompany drawings and support configuration control within engineering environments.
- Apply Design-to-Cost and Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) principles to optimize designs for production.
- Interpret engineering specifications and requirements and incorporate them into product design decisions.
- Collaborate with manufacturing teams to ensure designs align with processes, materials, and fabrication methods.
Essential Skills
- 5+ years (Intermediate) or 10+ years of mechanical design experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Experience designing rugged, high-reliability electro-mechanical systems for harsh environments.
- Strong mechanical design skills with expertise in sheet metal design.
- Proficiency with CAD modeling tools, including Inventor and AutoCAD.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
- Knowledge of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles.
- Knowledge of Design-to-Cost and DFMA principles and their application in mechanical design.
- Understanding of manufacturing processes and materials, including metals, polymers, ceramics, composites, and fabrication methods such as machining, forming, casting, fastening, and finishing.
- Knowledge of engineering standards (commercial, military, and industry) and their application to mechanical design, drafting, and technical documentation.
- Knowledge of mechanical drafting standards and engineering documentation systems.
- Knowledge of BOM development and configuration management in engineering environments.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Three-year College Diploma as a Mechanical Engineering Technologist or equivalent education.
- Experience in defense or aerospace environments, including work on armored vehicles and mission systems.
- Familiarity with containerized mission systems and logistics equipment design.
- Experience applying design principles in ruggedized and high-reliability applications.
- Ability to collaborate effectively in cross-functional engineering and manufacturing teams.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and compliance.
